Individual Ceremonies

Hartwell specialises in individual ceremonies. These include preparation for rites of passage which might include vision quest and also group ceremonies to mark marriages, baby naming and other. Each is developed in cooperation with the individuals involved and does not necessarily follow the form of any one tradition.

The Wilderness Quest for Vision & Self Healing

Since time immemorial people have gone to the wilderness to seek guidance and renewal, to let their old selves and old lives die and to find the conditions where spirit may be rekindled and reborn within them.

The Hartwell Vision Quest has been created to assist those who seek to find their true nature in Nature and who wish to ‘knock on the door of spirit' in a gentle yet profound way. Much of the time will be taken up with preparation and integration. The true work of the Vision Quest awaits us when we return to our people.

Participation on a Vision Quest starts long before one walks into the wilderness of nature. The seeds of participation may have been planted long ago, in childhood, and your arrival may seem part of a process unfolding steadily and naturally. Or the decision may be sudden, a crisis of transition causing something long-hidden to burst forth with compelling force, a force one cannot deny or refuse. Or it may just seem ‘the right time', an affirmative way to answer a question, mark a change or renew the spirit. Whatever path brings you to this Vision Quest, whether you feel called or driven, participation brings one to a process that is solitary, unique and universal. Alone, in nature, we stand before our mother the earth; we stand before our gods and goddesses; we stand before ourselves.

We quest in Penwith in Cornwall, an area rich in ancient sacred sites. A stone circle, a quoit, and the remains of an ancient village are all within walking distance. Our chosen venue has a variety of beautiful places in which to spend your time alone - some are sheltered, some in fields, some on wilder parts, some with views of the sea, some nestling among young trees. We quest in early summer when the flowers are out and the days should be warm.  And for the time that you are out, you really have an opportunity to rest, deepen, open to the natural world, to Spirit and to that inner wiser part of yourself that is generally lost under the rush of everyday life.  For some people these Vision Quests have been full of revelation and intensity and change; for others, they have been a time of rest, a time to recharge, recover and luxuriate in the experience of being held by the earth herself.

During our time away we spend two days in preparation, giving teachings both spiritual and practical, getting to know the land, finding your place of power, letting go of your everyday world.  You go out on the land alone, preferably fasting but with plenty to drink and a tent for shelter.  The days of reintegration are spent by a fire in a thatched roundhouse. Each story is witnessed and teaching is given to help illuminate the visions, dreams and signs that have come.

This is a powerful ceremony so we encourage people to make up their minds for it as soon as possible so that they have a good preparation time before they arrive at the site.

As this is a ceremony, payment is by donation.  We ask that you consider
both what the ceremony means to you and what it requires from us.  We are
happy to give you some guidance over this if you want but at the end, the
choice is yours.

I aim to send out about four to five people and am assisted by a woman
called Cathy Shea, see our faculty page.

As this is very much a personal ceremony, I suggest that if you're
interested, you phone Annie Spencer on 01225 312728 to talk around it.

Vision Quest this year will be held in Cornwall from 6 - 14 June. This includes time for a four day or three day quest; preparation time before and integration time on your return. Vision Quest is a ceremony and therefore we do not ask for a set fee but accept donations which hopefully will reflect teaching given, rental of the space and an honouring of the ceremony. We are happy to talk with you about this.

Despacho - a ceremony of healing and blessings

High in the Andes, around Lake Titicaca, live a group of people called the Q'ero. They live a very simple and hard life but they live it with great beauty. They live in a way that honours and remembers the spirit of the land in which they live and in particular the Apus, or mountains and Pachamama, or Mother Earth. Although the impact of settlers and conquistadors has hit them they still retain many ancient ceremonies. The despacho is one of them.

The word despacho literally means 'offering' and it is the practice of making offerings to spirit. This is done from the heart as it is seen as an act of love and a reminder of how we are connected to all things. For the person performing the ceremony it is like holding a first child, or sitting at your grandfather's knee, the flight of a song bird, the hum of summer, gazing into the eyes of a lover; and yet essentially it is a very simple ceremony, usually done with a lot of humour!

There are many reasons for performing a despacho: to ask for healing or blessings, to give thanks, and other specific purposes such as attracting love, if your business is struggling etc. Likewise, there are many different forms depending on the purpose. Whatever the intent, the heart of the despacho is always done to bring the person or community back into alignment with spirit and the dream of life and to establish a 'right relationship to spirit'. The despacho works on many layers and is a community ceremony done in cooperation with a sacred teacher plant. While the form varies depending on the type of despacho being performed all despachos involve the collecting together of certain items which become the recados that are bundled together during the ceremony in a particular way as on offering.

Hartwell is pleased to offer this ceremony to individuals or communities. The person leading the despacho does so in service to the community and out of love for spirit and our mother the earth and for this reason the service is offered free. We do however ask for a donation to enable Hartwell to continue its work to keep remembering our true relationship to spirit through ceremony and to call all to listen to our mother, the Earth and all our relations.

Despacho ceremonies are led by Willa Harlatt who, following a vision, travelled to Peru in the 1980's. While she was there she was taught to do despacho by the indigenous people living around Lake Titicaca as well as doing ceremony in the desert area and deep in the rainforest. She continues to receive guidance from Brother Father Coca, the teacher plant that carries the form of the despacho. She has also worked with the medicine wheels of Turtle Island and weaves these together with the traditions of this land. Over the last 20 years she has been taught by many different teachers and for the last few years has been working with Annie Spencer.

For course dates go to the calendar page.
